What is the CBD?

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is a United Nations treaty that came out of the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. It is about protecting the variety of life on Earth: plants, animals, microbes and the ecosystems they live in. The countries that have joined the treaty are called 'Parties', and they meet at a Conference of the Parties, or COP.

COP17 in Yerevan

The 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) is taking place in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, from 19 to 30 October 2026, and Armenia holds the presidency. The theme is 'Taking Action for Nature'. It is the second biodiversity COP since the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework was adopted.

The Kunming–Montreal Framework and its first review

The Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), adopted in 2022, sets four goals for 2050 and 23 targets for 2030. COP17 is carrying out the first Global Review of this framework. It checks how far the world has come by looking at each country's National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs).

What India said

Bhupender Yadav, India's Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, gave India's National Statement on 27 October 2026. He said the framework should be put into practice in line with each country's own priorities, circumstances and laws. He also asked developed countries to provide enough predictable finance, along with capacity-building and technology transfer, so that developing countries can meet their commitments.

Why it matters for exams

Questions on environmental treaties come up often in competitive exams. Remember the basics: the CBD dates from 1992, COP17 is being held in Yerevan, Armenia, the theme is 'Taking Action for Nature', and the KMGBF has 4 goals and 23 targets. India has set 23 national biodiversity targets of its own.
